Overview

Paddle the calm lagoon waters of Ushongo Beach

Ushongo Beach, south of Tanga near Pangani, has a wide, shallow lagoon protected by an offshore reef, giving calm, flat conditions well suited to stand-up paddleboarding. A guide covers balance and paddling basics before you set out along the coastline, with clear turquoise water beneath you most of the year.

Sessions suit first-timers and experienced paddlers alike, and morning outings tend to offer the calmest water before the afternoon trade winds pick up. Message our local booking managers on WhatsApp for a free consultation to plan your paddleboarding session.

About

Why Ushongo Beach Suits Paddleboarding

A fringing coral reef sits a short distance offshore from Ushongo Beach, breaking up incoming swell from the Indian Ocean and leaving the lagoon behind it calm and shallow for much of the tide cycle. This makes it one of the more forgiving spots along the Tanga coast to learn paddleboarding.

The same afternoon winds that draw kitesurfers to Ushongo tend to build later in the day, so paddleboarding sessions are usually timed for morning or early afternoon when the water is flattest.

Because the lagoon is part of a wider stretch of reef and mangrove coastline, paddlers often spot small reef fish in the shallows and can combine a session with a short snorkeling stop along the same stretch of water.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.

I had never booked through this company before and was concerned. But the driver was even early and everything was perfect. Absolutely the most amazing lemur experience.
