Overview

Dive the coral gardens of Maziwe Island Marine Reserve

Maziwe Island, a protected sandbank marine reserve off the Tanga coast, is surrounded by coral reefs that draw parrotfish, angelfish, moray eels, and the occasional reef shark or turtle. A certified guide leads dives suited to your experience level, from a first introductory dive to multi-tank trips for certified divers.

The reserve status of Maziwe means fishing is restricted, which has helped the reef recover and keeps marine life relatively abundant compared to less protected sites. Message our local booking managers on WhatsApp for a free consultation to plan your dive trip.

About

Why Maziwe Island Is a Protected Dive Site

Maziwe Island lies a short boat ride off the Tanga coast near Pangani and is designated a marine reserve, largely to protect nesting green turtles and the surrounding coral reef. The sandbank itself shifts with the tides and currents, occasionally disappearing beneath the water at high tide, which adds to its distinctive character.

Because it sits within a reserve, local dive operators follow no-anchor and no-fishing practices on the reef, which has helped coral cover and fish populations recover compared to unprotected sections of the coast nearby.

Visibility and conditions are generally best outside the main rainy season, and dive guides familiar with the site can time trips around tides and turtle nesting activity when relevant.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.
