Overview

Paddle the sheltered mangrove channels of the Tanga coast

Sea kayaking near Toten Island takes you through narrow mangrove channels and calm coastal waters just off Tanga, a very different pace from a motorized boat tour. A local guide leads the route, pointing out mangrove wildlife such as crabs, herons, and kingfishers along the way.

Suitable for beginners thanks to the sheltered, low-current conditions, trips run for 2 to 3 hours with all safety gear provided. Early morning departures tend to offer the calmest water and best birdwatching. Message our local booking managers on WhatsApp for a free consultation to plan your kayaking trip.

About

Mangroves and Marine Life Along the Tanga Coast

The coastline around Tanga includes stretches of mangrove forest that serve as nurseries for fish and crustaceans and help protect the shore from erosion. Paddling through these channels by kayak offers close access to this ecosystem that larger boats cannot reach.

Guides familiar with the area can identify the different mangrove species present and explain their role in supporting the fishing communities that depend on the coastal waters around Tanga and nearby Toten Island.

Because the channels are narrow and often only accessible at certain tide levels, guides plan departure times around the tide to make sure the full route is paddleable.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.
