Overview

Sail the Swahili coast the traditional way

A local crew sails you along the Tanga coastline aboard a traditional wooden dhow, the boat still used by fishermen up and down this stretch of the Indian Ocean. Routes typically pass mangrove-lined channels, quiet beaches, and small fishing settlements, with the pace set by the wind.

Sunset departures are especially popular for the light over the water, and trips can include a stop at a beach for swimming. Message our local booking managers on WhatsApp for a free consultation to plan your sailing trip.

About

Dhows Along Tanzania’s Swahili Coast

Dhows have sailed the waters off Tanga for centuries, historically linking the town to trade routes stretching across the Indian Ocean to Arabia and beyond, a history still visible in Tanga’s Swahili and Arab architectural influences. Sailing one today gives a direct connection to that maritime heritage.

Crews are typically local fishermen or sailors familiar with the coast’s mangrove channels and tidal patterns, and can point out landmarks such as Toten Island, historic ruins along the shoreline, and fishing grounds still in active use.

Because the dhow relies on wind rather than an engine, the exact pace and route can shift slightly depending on conditions, which is part of what makes the experience feel authentic rather than scripted.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.

I had never booked through this company before and was concerned. But the driver was even early and everything was perfect. Absolutely the most amazing lemur experience.
