Overview

Learn Sukuma rhythms hands-on with local performers

The Sukuma are Tanzania’s largest ethnic group and are based around Mwanza and Lake Victoria, with a performance culture built around ngoma drumming and dance. In this workshop, local performers teach you basic drum patterns and dance steps, breaking down the rhythms used in traditional Sukuma celebrations.

No musical experience is needed, and sessions are adapted for individuals, couples, or groups. Add a short performance by the group at the end of the workshop, or dress in traditional attire for photos. Message our local booking managers on WhatsApp for a free consultation to plan your workshop.

About

The Sukuma Tradition of Drumming and Dance

Sukuma drumming and dance societies, known as bagalu, have historically competed at festivals and ceremonies across the Mwanza region, with performances often built around storytelling, snake handling displays, or acrobatics depending on the specific group. The drumming itself uses layered rhythms played on different-sized drums.

Workshop instructors are typically connected to local cultural groups active around Mwanza and Bujora, and can explain the meaning behind specific rhythms and dance movements, which are often tied to harvests, marriages, or other community occasions.

Learning even a few basic patterns gives a much deeper appreciation for the drumming and dancing you may see elsewhere in the region, including at cultural museums and village celebrations.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.
