The Geology Behind Mwanza’s Rock Formations

The boulders scattered across Mwanza are ancient granite, exposed over millions of years as softer surrounding rock eroded away, a process known as spheroidal weathering. The result is a landscape of smooth, rounded outcrops found in few other East African cities, which is why Mwanza is nicknamed the Rock City.

A small community of local climbers has begun developing and bolting routes on some of these formations in recent years, and instructors familiar with the rock can match routes to your experience level, from first-timers to climbers comfortable on steeper faces.

Because many of the boulders sit within or right beside the city, climbing here also offers an unusual vantage point over Mwanza’s neighborhoods, the port, and the lake beyond.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.
