Overview

Fish for Nile perch on Africa’s largest lake

Lake Victoria is famous among anglers for its Nile perch, a powerful freshwater fish that can grow to well over 50 kilograms, alongside tilapia and other native species. A local skipper takes you out to productive fishing grounds near Mwanza’s rocky shoreline and islands, with all rods, tackle, and bait supplied.

Charters suit both experienced anglers chasing a trophy catch and casual visitors who want a relaxed morning on the water. Choose a half-day trip or extend to a full day, and ask about having your catch prepared for lunch. Message our local booking managers on WhatsApp for a free consultation to plan your fishing charter.

About

Nile Perch and the Fishing Culture of Lake Victoria

Nile perch were introduced into Lake Victoria in the mid-20th century and have since become the backbone of the region’s fishing industry, supplying processing factories in Mwanza that export fillets internationally. For anglers, this means a genuine chance at a large, hard-fighting fish rather than a staged tourist experience.

Local skippers fish the same grounds used by Mwanza’s commercial fishing fleet and can explain how the industry shapes daily life in the city, from the fish market near the port to the smoking and drying racks seen along the shore.

Tilapia, catfish, and other species are also commonly caught, making the charter a good option for anglers who simply want steady action rather than holding out for a single trophy fish.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.
