Overview

Explore East Africa’s largest limestone cave system

Around 8 kilometers north of Tanga, the Amboni Caves form the largest limestone cave system in East Africa, with chambers of stalactites and stalagmites shaped over roughly 150 million years. A local guide leads you through the accessible sections, pointing out rock formations, bat colonies, and features tied to local folklore.

Wear light, comfortable clothing and closed shoes, as parts of the cave can be warm and slightly damp. The route is suited to most visitors and does not require any climbing or technical caving skills. Message our local booking managers on WhatsApp for a free consultation to plan your visit.

About

Inside Tanga’s Ancient Cave System

The Amboni Caves sit within a much larger limestone system that has never been fully mapped, with some estimates suggesting it extends well beyond the sections open to visitors. Only a small portion is developed for guided visits, but even this stretch reveals dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations built up over millions of years.

Local Swahili tradition attaches spiritual significance to parts of the cave, and guides often share stories connected to specific chambers or rock formations, adding cultural context to what is already a striking natural site.

The caves are also home to several bat colonies, and guides can point out roosting areas while explaining how the ecosystem inside the cave differs from the forest and farmland above ground.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.
