Overview

Paddle Lake Victoria’s sheltered bays on a guided kayaking excursion

Set out from the Mwanza shoreline in a stable single or tandem kayak and glide past the smooth granite boulders the city is famous for. Calm, sheltered bays make this a relaxed way to see Bismarck Rock, small fishing islets, and local dugout canoes from the water, with chances to spot herons, kingfishers, and other lake birds along the way.

Suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers alike, trips run for 2 to 3 hours with all safety gear provided. Add a sunset departure or a guide focused on birdlife and photography. Message our local booking managers on WhatsApp for a free consultation to tailor your kayaking trip.

About

Discover Mwanza’s Rock City Coastline from the Water

Mwanza sits on the southern shore of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake, where huge wind-smoothed granite boulders rise straight out of the water. Kayaking is one of the few ways to reach the quiet coves and islets tucked between these formations, well away from the noise of the port and city center.

Local paddling guides know the safest channels and the best times of day to avoid wind chop, usually early morning or late afternoon. Along the way you will pass small fishing communities that still use traditional wooden boats, giving a firsthand look at how life on the lake has continued for generations.

Because Lake Victoria supports Mwanza’s fishing economy, guides can also point out tilapia and Nile perch fishing grounds and explain how the catch reaches the city’s markets, adding useful context to the paddling itself.

The tour was interesting, and the driver was good. However, we feel the travel agency should have informed us in advance about the guides who wait at the park entrances and accompany tourists to geysers and waterfalls. The booking confirmation made no mention of this at all; it only stated that park entrance fees, food, and drinks were not included. When we have no idea how much the guide’s services will cost, we don't know how much cash to bring, since credit cards aren't accepted in places like that.
